Merkel supported Rice`s measures of struggle with terrorism
The chancellor Angela Merkel supported position of USA general secretary Condoleezza Rice regarding struggle with international terrorism.
At press-conference, which took place in Berlin, Merkel and Rice emphasized that secret operations of special services can not be discussed in public because any discussions will harm their work.
Merkel explained that she discussed question of secret CIA operations with Rice. The matter concerns kidnapping of German citizen of Livonian origination Haleda al-Masri. He was taken by CIA from Macedonia to Afghanistan in 2003, where stayed in prison for 5 months on suspicion of terrorism. When mistake was revealed, he was released.
Merkel emphasized that democratic rights must be kept even during struggle against terrorism. She noted that secret activity of special serviced is vital for prevention of terrorism threat.
The head of German government noted that foreign special services must respect sovereignty of other countries. Merkel requested parliamentarian investigation of the fact that German aerodromes were used by USA special services.
USA general secretary Condoleezza Rice started 4-day European tour in Berlin. Before visit she confirmed information that USA keeps suspected terrorists on military USA bases. But she refused to comment possible location of CIA prisons in East-European countries.
